Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who’s the Most Racist of them All, in San Francisco?
Words cannot fully express how happy I am that SF Board of Supervisors president London Breed, has been elected mayor of San Francisco. However, I take great exception to an SF Chronicle article claiming her being elected mayor offers hope to the dwindling SF Black community especially since the main print media of The City is the last one interested in offering hope to the SF Black communities.
In fact, as a Black man and longtime resident of San Francisco (1960), I view this election as a way for White San Francisco to more easily hide its racism behind the election of a Black woman as mayor.
But avoiding even a quick look in the mirror speaks volumes.
The main Democratic organization of The City is called the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee. (SFDCCC) This group includes 30 top SF Democrats. Among its leading voices are, Senator Dianne Feinstein, House Rep. Nancy Pelosi and SF Mayor-elect London Breed. The SFDCCC endorsed for mayor of San Francisco in the June 2018 election as their first choice, a gay White man named Mark Leno. As their second choice to lead The City they selected a Korean woman, Jane Kim, born and raised in New York; over a Black woman, London Breed, born and raised in San Francisco.
Mark Farrell, a White man and member of the SF Board of Supervisors was selected to be temporary mayor as the result of a plot by his White colleagues on this board. In this plot, 4 White, board members conspired, claiming The City should have a fair process in selecting a new mayor in a June 2018 special election, due to the sudden and unexpected death of SF Mayor Ed Lee. City charter rules state that the board president is named mayor when the office becomes vacant. But the charter gives power to the board to select a new mayor or keep the board president as mayor until a special election where the voters will decide who will lead The City until the next normal election. So, by using the City charter rules, they justified ousting the board President London Breed, not for fairness but to keep her from becoming mayor altogether behind the newest member to the board, Supervisor Hillary Ronen.
In selecting Farrell as the best person to ensure “fairness” they chose a man who, according to the San Francisco Ethics Commission, then-Supervisor Mark Farrell lacked “Integrity.” They did so after a long drawn out process where the Ethics Commission accepted $25,000 of the $190,000.00 in illegal campaign funds Farrell was convicted of keeping.
Subsequently, Farrell was rewarded by his White colleagues by simply going along with the scheme to oust a Black woman. Never mind the fact, Farrell jeopardized the entire moderate faction of the Democratic party for selfish reasons. If fellow moderate Breed had lost in her bid to be mayor, the progressives of the Democratic party would have controlled both the executive and legislative branches of city government in San Francisco.
But this racist scheme had a shelf life of six months. And since the perpetrators will be a major part of San Francisco politics for quite some time, it would be wise that the top executive of San Francisco sleep with one eye open and fixed on San Francisco top Democrats.
Outsiders would think that the election of a Black woman as mayor of San Francisco is proof that The City is “post-racial.” But nothing could be further from the truth. The defeat of Proposition I in the same election proves the opposite. Proposition I was a statement of support for the Black community of Oakland, CA. But for SF voters to reject it 58% to 42% proves that San Francisco has no respect for its neighbor Oakland’s Black community.
I wrote Proposition I and part of this measure stated, The City would take a stand against billionaire owners of professional sports teams who try to walk out on paying a public debt. So why would San Francisco voters side with billionaire owners of professional sports teams over a Black community? My educated guess is that the White voters of San Francisco couldn’t care less about Oakland’s Black community even if it means siding with the Golden State Warriors who are attempting to avoid paying a public bond debt to Oakland of an estimated $40 million after moving to San Francisco.
Speaking of neighbors, in 2009 I moved out of a house that my family owned since 1963. When my father first attempted to buy this home, he was turned down. He was only permitted to purchase it if a White woman friend of his was first on the deed. Fast forward to today. I spoke with the son of our then next-door neighbor. His mother still lives next door. It has been nine years since the White family moved into our old home and the couple has not said one word to their Hispanic next-door neighbor.
Byron Gill works for The City as a gardener for 23 years. Gill, trained a White woman for two years and his reward? He came to work one day to discover the same White woman was now his boss. When he filed a complaint claiming discrimination he was retaliated against in a way that is best described as this White woman treated him like he was her slave.
Thomas Willis, a heterosexual Black man worked for the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, under the executive director Theresa Sparks, a White transgender woman. Willis sued The City and Sparks for discriminating against him just because he was a straight Black male. The City settled the matter for $210,000.00. What is so egregious about this matter is that the SF Human Rights Commission was formed in 1964 to fight discrimination against members of the Black communities of San Francisco.
January 2014, I was elected by members and staff of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC) to be a member of a community advisory board for the HRC. April 15, I was removed or kicked off that same advisory by the Commission’s authority. In their dismissal letter to me it was alleged I did not work well with my committee members. But what got me kicked off the committee was my integrity. I refused to use a fraudulent document as a guide for a yearlong project.
Former Mayor Gavin Newsom commissioned a report that was known as the “2009 Black Outmigration Report” though that was not its official title. The report was led by the late Aileen Hernandez. It was to address the issue of why so many Black San Franciscans were leaving The City and how best to reverse the trend. This report was updated in 2012 under Mayor Ed Lee but my committee members shocked me by informing me why Ms. Hernandez would have nothing to do with the report. After Ms. Hernandez turned in the report, it was altered in a way that she thought turned her hard work into a fraud. This included the fact, the head of our sub-committee for this yearlong assignment Larry Chatmon showed me where his name appeared in the final document and he had nothing to do with the report at all.
If a White man commissions a report on Black people and then alters the report for more than crossing of an I or dotting a T you cannot expect anyone with integrity to use such a report as gospel even if the document is pretty to look at.
Dewayne Kemp, a Black man is walking up the street with his girlfriend. A White transgender bumped into him as she passes the couple. Kemp questioned her lack of courtesy to apologize. According to the police report, the White transgender turned around and shouted, “Get out of my city, nigger!” A fight ensued where Kemp used the word faggot in describing the transgender. Kemp was arrested along with his girlfriend and both Kemp and his girlfriend were convicted of a hate crime.
The Late Harvey Milk has been hailed as the gay Gandhi for the LGBTQ community. But no one is willing to talk about the fact, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors by the efforts of Black San Franciscans under the control of mass murderer Rev. Jim Jones. Nor will they dare talk about the letter Milk sent to then-President Jimmy Carter in support of the Rev. Jim Jones, who is mainly responsible for the deaths of over 900 mostly Black San Franciscans and the six-year-old White boy, which was the subject of the Milk letter.
Ten Black girls were being detained at the San Francisco juvenile hall in February 2018. Mike Munson, the current program director for the entire facility who happens to be a White man, has a program for these 10 girls to commemorate Black history 2018. The program was put on by 19 women from outside of the facility. Of the 19 women, 18 of them were White and the one of unknown race. In addition, looking at the total list of programs for the facility (guessing 20) all but one is administered by White people; even though the young people detained at the facility are mostly minority youth.
I could be wrong in saying, 18 White women did not teach a thirteen-year-old Black girl named London Breed how to get to the top. However, I am not wrong in stating, White people in San Francisco are now able to hide their racism behind a Black woman mayor. And the simple explanation for why this racism will continue to be hidden in The City, is the main print media refuses to look in the mirror.
If they (print media) did look in the mirror, the mirror would tell them: Not reporting nearly enough on racism against SF Black residents allows it to continue unchecked. Silence is consent.
