A call for a boycott of San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

As host of a weekly public access TV program, The Angelic Troublemakers, I have called for Blacks everywhere to boycott SFO airport, in protest of a San Francisco City Hall ordinance to honor the late Harvey Milk.

Mindful of the March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airline crash that killed all 157 on board, I am heartbroken to announce a call for this boycott at a time when families are still dealing with the deaths of their loved ones.

Not having fully processed the airplane crash himself, a day later, I read in San Francisco Examiner where the sponsor of the ordinance, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was not happy with the “size” of the lettering to honor Milk.

One option presented Monday from the “Terminal 1: The Harvey B. Milk Terminal Exterior Signage Study.” (Courtesy SFO)

Calling the current design, “Insulting”, this member of the legislative body of San Francisco set in motion Milk’s name be made larger as part of the newly constructed SFO international terminal set to open this summer.

This decree by the legislative body of San Francisco is disrespectful to the 900 mostly Black San Franciscans who were killed at the direction of cult leader Jim Jones; in the Jonestown massacre of 1978. Nine days later, Harvey Milk was assassinated at City Hall.

But according to a San Diego State University copy of a letter by Milk, to former president Jimmie Carter dated February 19, 1978, or nine months prior, to the mass suicides at the direction of cult leader Jim Jones, Milk defends and praises Jones in a custody battle of a six-year-old boy. It has been reported, the young boy in the custody of Jim Jones was among the 900 Blacks that died in that Jonestown massacre.

The letter is a powerful piece of evidence that suggests poor judgment alone should disqualify such an honor for Milk, and I concede, many San Francisco politicians along with Milk were duped by this cult leader.

In an affront to SFO policy and Airport Commission, the legislative body is determined to force its will. I say, “Enough!” The goal of this boycott is to reverse the decree to affix the late politician’s name to the SFO structure altogether.
